Electricity prices are reminiscent of the summer of 2022, and the Mitsotakis government is restoring tariff subsidies to prevent consumers from being completely burned out by the continuous “electric shock”.

The wild rise in wholesale prices threatens to leave bills similar in size to those of 2022, when entire salaries had to be spent to pay them. The decisions, which are currently being clarified by Environment and Energy Minister Theodoros Skylakakis, were announced on Tuesday at a meeting with the Prime Minister at the Maximou mansion.

The minister announced an emergency restoration of the fee for electricity generated by gas, temporarily, for at least 2 months – July and August. The exact amount will be announced in the next few days, he said. He also announced subsidies for households in August How and in what amount will be announced at the end of July-beginning of August, after it becomes known how prices will move.

The Energy Minister noted that one of the main measures taken in the last year has been the introduction of colour tariffs, which give consumers a choice. As for farmers, the Minister said it is in their interests to join GEA. According to him, this will provide them with energy for two years at pre-crisis prices. They have until October, and Mr. Skylakakis urges them “go and register with GEA yesterday.”

In an interview with SKAI, Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced the government's decision to impose an emergency levy on electricity producers for two months to make life easier for citizens in August. This is an emergency tax intervention. “We will use this income to help pay our electricity bills in August. Because at present, given the dynamics of prices, citizens will indeed see a sharp increase in electricity prices in August.“, – said He.
