Eurostat: Every tenth Greek cannot eat a full meal every two days


The number of people who cannot afford to consume quality protein every day is constantly growing.

According to new data, One in ten Greeks cannot eat a full meal of fish, meat or equivalent plant protein every two days because they cannot afford it.

The figures provided by Eurostat put our country at fifth worst in the European Union in this capacity, which is an important indicator of material and social deprivation.

These data were published by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat), according to newsitamea. In 2023, 9.5% of the population of the European Union (EU) couldn't eat properly every other dayThis percentage is increased compared to the corresponding figure for 2022 (it was 8.3%).

Among those at increased risk of poverty, the corresponding percentage averaged 22.3%. This is an increase compared to 2022 (it was 19.7%).

However, in Greece has more people who cannot eat properly three times a week. The figure covers almost 11% of the population and exceeds 38% among those at risk of poverty.

According to Eurostat, people with incomes below 60% of the average are at risk of poverty.

Nationally, the countries with the highest percentage of people at high risk of poverty who cannot eat a nutritious meal every day are:

  • Slovakia (45.7% of the population)
  • Hungary (44.9%)
  • Bulgaria (40.2%).

And vice versa, the most prosperous (in terms of nutrition) countries:

  • Ireland (4.2%)
  • Cyprus (5%)
  • Portugal (5.9%).

A household's ability to cook one meal a day of meat, fish or vegetable protein equivalent is one of the indicators taken into account to calculate the index of severe material and social deprivation, Eurostat explains.
