France's Far Right Won't Get Absolute Majority, Poll Says (Video)

A new poll suggests that the far-right National Rally party will not win an absolute majority in the second round of France's parliamentary elections on July 7.

As Reuters reports, an IFOP poll for LCI television and Le Figaro showed that the National Rally won more seats than any other party, but did not cross the 289-vote threshold needed to win an absolute majority in parliament.

That is, apparently, the “republican front”, thanks to which more than two hundred candidates from across the political spectrum withdrew their candidaciesto clear the way for the far-right's best chance of winning in his district has worked. The study shows that National Rally will have between 210 and 240 seats, up from 240 to 270 before the withdrawals.

This is the second poll to give such a forecast for the upcoming elections. On Wednesday, a Harris Interactive poll predicted between 190 and 220 seats for the far right.

The left-wing New Popular Front alliance is projected to come in second, with 170 to 200 seats, ahead of President Emmanuel Macron's centrist Together bloc, which will have 95 to 125 seats. The conservative Republicans are expected to win 25 to 45 seats, according to the poll.

Gabriel Attal, France's prime minister, said earlier that a cross-party bid to deprive the far-right National Rally of its majority in the second round of parliamentary elections on Sunday could succeed.
