Santorini: Limit of 8,000 guests per day with croisieres

From now on, Santorini will receive up to 8,000 cruise visitors a day, while, according to the island's mayor, their number has reached even 19,000.

The restriction was agreed upon during a recent meeting between the heads of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and the Mayor of Santorini, Mr. Nikos Zorzos.

During the meeting, CLIA acknowledged that the management of cruise tourism in Santorini is a priority for the industry in Greece, with Mr. Zorzos saying: “We are pleased that the Municipality of Thira has discussed and agreed with CLIA on solutions for the sustainable operation of Santorini cruise tourism in order to protect the uniqueness of our destination and the passenger experience.”

Mr. Zorzos, in his statements to Kathimerini tis Kyriaki, notes thatThe number of cruise ship visitors arriving in Santorini was 19,000 per day, a number that was creating problems for the orderly operation of the islandHe also points out that Santorini is now also facing the problem of overdevelopment of the island: the rate reaches 20%, which means that Santorini is more densely populated than even Attica.

For her part, Ms. Maria Deliani, CLIA Representative in Greece, said: “Santorini is a special and extremely popular destination and we share the opinion recently expressed by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis about the importance of responsible tourism management on the island“Mayor Nikolaos Zorzos has made it clear to us since the beginning of this season that he intends to strictly respect the existing daily limit of 8,000 cruise guests, based on 75% occupancy of cruise ships, and we support this position, recognizing the particularities of Santorini. While we believe that a holistic approach is needed to address the tourist flows on the island, we are particularly pleased to be the first to collaborate with the Municipality of Thira.”
