Athanasios Ganas, scientific director of the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, warns: “There is a fault in Larissa that could cause an earthquake of more than 6 on the Richter scale.”
The scientific director of the geodynamic research sounds the alarm, explaining:
“In Larisa we know that there is a fault running through the city, which we have mapped, it is at least 11 kilometers long. This means that it could cause an earthquake of more than 6 on the Richter scale, maybe 6.2 Richter. There are other faults near Larissa, which continue east towards Platikambos, north towards Gyrthoni and further north towards Rodia, which require attention.”
Athanasios Ganas specified that it is necessary to map the Larissa fault, as well as find data on when the last earthquake occurred in this area, quotes newsbeast.gr edition:
“It could have happened 2,000 years ago, which means the fault is at the end of a cycle and therefore mature. Or it could have happened earlier, because there is no historical data. So we have no data to characterise how dangerous this fault is. The same applies to faults further east, towards Platikambos, and further north, such as Asmaki and Eleftherio. More work needs to be done on the ground before we can characterise their hazard.”
The scientific director of the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens asked the question, How can you give permission to build ten-story buildings in this particular area:
“I think this is criminal not only for Larissa, but also for Volos and the whole of Thessaly. Our cities are built on or near fault lines, so evacuation plans are necessary. High-rise buildings cannot be located inside adjacent building blocks. This is a big mistake and it must stop. I am sounding the alarm.”
