Large-scale evacuation of tourists on the island of Kos (video)

Hundreds of tourists were evacuated from hotels on the night of July 2 due to large-scale forest fires on the island of Kos.

European media write about this. Swedish broadcaster SVT reportsthat yesterday evening, July 1, more than two hundred Swedish tourists began to be evacuated from hotels in the city of Kardamena, on orders from rescuers. Dozens of tourists from Poland also had a bad vacation. One of them said Polish RMF24 that smoke from the fire could already be seen from the beach from about 2pm. The woman says:

“We were assured that nothing terrible was happening, a fire in the mountains. There were planes and helicopters flying around, putting it out. And about an hour later the police came to the hotel and told us to quickly collect the most essential things.”

The evacuees were temporarily housed in school gyms. The Apollo travel agency reported that the island administration has not yet issued an order for a total evacuation, so tourists are looking for accommodation options:

“We are waiting for developments. If the situation improves, they will be able to return to the hotels, or we will arrange new accommodation.”

Greek edition Kathimerini reportsthat about 10 thousand people – tourists and local residents – were evacuated from the danger zone on the island. The fire, which was spreading in the direction of Kardamena, has now been brought under control.

It remains to add that, in addition to Kos, fires are burning on the islands of Chios and Crete. Let us recall: last year, fires on the island of Rhodes disrupted the tourist season and forced the evacuation of thousands of tourists, who are now offered to come and rest for free.

According to the latest information, firefighting and civil defense forces fought fires on the island of Kos, Chios and Heraklion in Crete all night long. On Kos, according to statements Firefighters say the front is in a state of decline and the flames are now under control.
