Prices for green electricity are “biting”

Prices for “green” electricity tariffs will rise sharply in July, with announcements expected today, July 1.

The increase in tariffs for “green” electricity was recently announced by the Minister of Energy and Environment Theodoros Skylakakis, who told SKAI that “gas prices are having a very strong impact on us.” The minister explained that we are affected by the fact that: “When you have increased demand, you add demand from abroad, precisely because we are in an interconnected system. Similarly, when we have high temperatures, it affects the performance of photovoltaic panels.”However, Skilakakis stressed: “We will not have permanently high prices compared to January, the average price by the end of the year will be about the same.”

Price increase by “green” Tariffs were also observed in June, when they increased by 50% compared to May. The dynamics of prices for green tariffs in 2024 was:

  • 14.7 cents per kilowatt-hour in January,
  • 13.3 cents per kilowatt-hour in February,
  • 10.5 cents per kilowatt-hour in March,
  • 10.8 cents per kilowatt-hour in April,
  • 10.3 cents per kilowatt-hour in May and
  • 15 cents per kilowatt-hour in June.

It should be noted that prices are affected by market fluctuations as this is an exchange traded product and the energy stock market has been moving higher recently due to high summer demand.

On the wholesale market, the picture is even more unpleasant for consumers: in May the price was 81.08 euros per megawatt-hour, and the average wholesale price for June closed at 98.89 euros/MWh: due to rising prices for natural gas, increased demand and new sanctions EU to Russia. That is, from May to June, the wholesale price increased by 21.9%.
