Why are some people addicted to frappe?

There is a scientific explanation for why some people cannot avoid drinking iced coffee every day, which in Greece is called frappe.

The simplest answer and explanation for this addiction is that for some, iced coffee can be a daily psychological injection.

Psychologist Dr. Deborah Gilman, Ph.D., says that as with many habits, some just… become ingrained. If frappe becomes part of a person's regular “ritual”, he can stick to it, regardless of weather conditions. She also added that making the same decisions every day can be a way to save mental energy for other decisions and tasks. This habit gives a sense of stability in a world that is largely unpredictable.

Having certain stable parameters in everyday life (even drinking the same coffee at the same time) makes people feel less anxious and more secure. In addition, a study published in the Cureus Journal of Medical Science in 2021 found that caffeine in hot or cold coffee may influence “feel good” neurotransmitters in the brain, positively stimulating the central nervous system.

It improves your mood, reduces stress, and increases feelings of pleasure, satisfaction, and motivation to complete your daily tasks. One of the limiting factors of coffee is its unique and strong taste, which may not appeal to everyone. When coffee is hotter, the flavor becomes more intense. This happens because hot coffee stimulates proteins like TRPM5 in taste buds, which are sensitive to temperature.

At low temperatures, TRPM5 levels decrease, making iced coffee popular among people who are more sensitive to the natural acidity and bitterness of coffee. In addition, many people feel more alert and energetic after drinking a cup of iced coffee, even in cold weather. On the other hand, a hot drink can be more relaxing.

Caffeine is a stimulant and the most abundant active substance in the world. Its benefits include increased concentration, energy and alertness. It can also help improve athletic performance, improve brain function, and develop memory.

However, caffeine can also cause headaches and insomnia. In addition, it can be fraught with depression, increased blood sugar levels, pregnancy complications and gout. Experts recommend consuming no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day. Up to this level, no negative effects have been scientifically recorded. For children, experts recommend avoiding caffeine and other stimulants.

A 235 ml cup of coffee can contain 95-200 mg of caffeine, and the same cup of tea can contain 14-60 mg.
