Russian conductor, graduate of the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory Sergei Akimov (class of Professor I.A. Dronov), became a laureate of the XVI International Dimitri Mitropoulos Competition in Thessaloniki (Greece).
The musician took “silver”, the first prize was not awarded. “Bronze” was shared between Oliver Cope (Great Britain) and Simon Edelman (Germany), the publication reports Music life. The jury was headed by maestro Thomas Sanderling.
The Dimitri Mitropoulos Competition was established in 1996 in honor of the centenary of the birth of the outstanding Greek conductor and composer. Over the years, the chairmen of the jury were Luciano Berio, Sir Neville Marriner, Rudolf Barshai, Cesare Mazzonis and Cristobal Halfter.
Sergey Akimov has been working at the Moscow Operetta Theater since 2016. The founder and director of the chamber orchestra Affrettando, performed the Russian premiere of J. Gershwin's opera “Sad Monday”. Italian Opera Academy member Riccardo Muti, finalist of the Nestle & Salzburg Young Conductors Award, successfully held a concert with the Camerata Salzburg orchestra as part of the Salzburg Festival. Conductor of the ensemble “Studio of New Music”.
