Norway closes borders to Russian tourists, even with visas

The Norwegian government has decided to ban entry for Russians if the purpose of the trip is tourism or other unimportant reasons.

About it reports “European Truth”, referring to solution Norwegian government. It says that Russian citizens who want to enter Norway for tourism purposes or are planning other non-essential trips may be denied entry when crossing the external border.

The rules will apply to both those with visas issued by Norway before the tightening of visa practices in the spring of 2022, and those who have visas issued by other Schengen countries. Exceptions in some cases will concern:

  • visiting close relatives – parents, spouses, cohabitants and children,
  • living in Norway,
  • Russian citizens who work or study in Norway and other Schengen countries.

Changes come into force on May 29. The Norwegian government recalls that it has changed the practice of issuing visas for Russians in the spring of 2022. After this, tourist visas for Russians, as a rule, are not issued. Now entry conditions are becoming even more stringent. Emilia Enger Mehl, Minister of Justice and Emergency Situations, said:

“The decision to tighten entry rules is in line with Norway’s line of standing with allies and partners in countering Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine.”

Earlier, in the fall of 2022, several Russians were detained in Norway for carrying out unauthorized filming from a drone.
