The cocktail of dust and heat created a suffocating atmosphere

“Uncomfortable” is how the weather in Greece on Monday can be described. A cocktail of African dust, humidity, mud rain and high temperatures created a suffocating atmosphere over the country.

Skies in the Attica region have turned an unsightly shade of brown as authorities continue to warn people of the health risks associated with the phenomenon. Meteorologists expect these conditions to continue at least through Wednesday. According to meteo.gr for the next 3 days, the weather in Attica will initially be partly cloudy, but then air transparency will decrease as the concentration of dust in the atmosphere increases. Temperatures will range from 21 to 31°C, but in the northern and eastern parts of the region it will be 2-3 degrees colder.

Scattered showers are expected in Macedonia, Thrace and possibly the islands of the northern Aegean Sea in the morning, while localized showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected in the highlands of Epirus, Macedonia, the central and western part of the mainland and the Peloponnese in the afternoon and afternoon .

Where it rains, the dust will turn the raindrops red, so do not wash your car for several days. The Ministry of Health recommended a number of measures for citizens to protect themselves from high concentrations of dust:

  • Stay indoors, especially in areas with high dust concentrations, with windows, doors and entrances closed to minimize exposure to outside air.
  • Use a recirculating air system in your air conditioner to keep the air quality inside your home as high as possible. Cleaning the air conditioner filters is also necessary.
  • Avoid sources of indoor air pollution such as smoking, barbecuing, lighting a fireplace, using air sprays, etc.
