Bloody attack in central Sydney – six dead, killer shot dead by police (video)

An unknown assailant attacked shoppers with a knife at a Sydney shopping center near Bondi Beach, and police say there was a shooting. Six people died from stab wounds.

Westfield Bondi Junction, one of Australia's largest shopping complexes, was packed with shoppers on Saturday afternoon. A statement from New South Wales Police said: quotes Air Force:

“The tragic incident began when a man opened fire in Bondi Junction. Just before 4pm, reports of multiple stabbing victims were received from Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center and emergency services were dispatched to the area.”

People ran out of the shopping center in panic, and police and emergency vehicles converged on the building. Eyewitnesses say the busy Sydney shopping center was filled with “chaos and madness” with “screaming, screaming and people running around”. One says he saw a policewoman and followed her, then noticed a man armed with a “big blade” heading their way:

“He just started moving towards us, and I just heard her tell him to put the weapon down. And then she shot him. If she hadn’t shot him, he would have continued to run, he was on edge.”

Security camera footage shown by local media showed a man running through the mall with a large knife and injured people lying on the floor.

According to an eyewitness, it looked as if the man had “come to kill.” He himself saw two bodies, a man and a woman, near the entrance to the wedding salon. Another shopping center visitor told how she saw a crowd of people running and heard a shot:

“My husband dragged us into an Adairs store where a woman tried to lock the doors but couldn’t, so we went into an office where we locked ourselves in from the inside and stayed there until the police came for us.”

The Australian Prime Minister was informed of the incident. He wrote in X:

“Sadly, numerous casualties have been reported and the first thoughts of all Australians are with the victims and their loved ones. Our hearts go out to those injured and thank those caring for them, as well as our brave police officers and first responders.”

Agence France-Presse, citing the New South Wales Ambulance Service, reports one man was shot dead by police – presumably the attacker. The motive for the attack is not yet clear.

It was previously reported that there were two attackers, but this information was not confirmed. A police spokesman said the suspect acted alone. The identity of the perpetrator has not yet been established. At least seven people were taken to Sydney hospitals with stab wounds.
