The first kilometer of the 4th line of the Athens metro has been laid

An important milestone has been achieved in the construction of metro line 4, which, once completed, will serve traffic from Galati to Goudi.

According to AVAX, the first kilometer has already been laid. That is, 20% of a specific site has been built as part of the largest public project carried out in Greece today.

The first section of Line 4 is designed to serve many of Athens' densely populated areas. Four new stations will be built in the city center (Exarchia, Akadimias, Kolonaki, Evagelismos). The metro line will help relieve congestion at existing central metro stations, and will also provide connections to many important facilities and institutions, such as hospitals, educational institutions, etc.

Once the metro is operational, traffic is expected to decrease as approximately 53,000 vehicles per day will be restricted. The new line will reduce the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by 318 tons. The construction program includes landscaping works that will beautify Athens. Earlier it was reported that citizens will have to wait at least eight years for the metro to open.

Work has started in Katehaki and is moving towards Evangelismos (5.1 km). Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Christos Staikouras noted that “new metro stations will combine functionality and aesthetics“.

By mid-2025, the first tunneling shields (μετροπόντικας) will pass through Zografou and Kesariani, reaching Rizari Park. “The construction of the tunnel already in the first kilometer is the result of the high standards of the process followed and the high pace of construction. A concrete ring is installed every one and a half meters. After which the tunnel is left complete,” said AVAX Group management.

The second one moves towards the first tunneling shield. Work started from Veiku station in Galati and after the construction of the 7-kilometer tunnel, the connection will take place. The path will be completed in mid-2026.

Metro Line 4 will serve more than 350 thousand citizens, passing through densely populated areas of Athens such as Ilisia, Zografou, Kaysariani, Kolonaki, Exarchia, Kypseli and Galatsi.
