Most Ukrainians want to join the EU and NATO, survey shows

A survey in February 2024 showed that Ukrainians still strive to EU and NATO. NATO membership is most supported in the center (83%) and in the west of Ukraine – 82%. The most active support for joining the European Union is in the West of the country – 81% of respondents.

Results of a survey by the “Rating” group on behalf of the Center for Analysis and Sociological Research of the International Republican Institute (IRI):

  • membership in the EU and NATO is supported by 77% of Ukrainians, that is, the overwhelming majority;
  • in response to the question about Ukraine joining a specific international economic union, 77% of respondents in February chose the European Union. This is 8% less than in February 2023, when 85% of respondents were in favor of joining the EU;
  • If a referendum on Ukraine's accession to NATO were held today, 77% of Ukrainians would vote in support of such accession. This is 5% less than in February 2023, when 82% of respondents would have voted to join NATO.

Opinions about the timing of accession to the EU were divided among respondents as follows:

  • 32% of respondents believe that Ukraine will be able to become a member of the EU in 3-5 years;
  • 26% assume that this will take even less than 3 years;
  • 15% of respondents think that accession to the EU will take more than 10 years;
  • 3% pessimistically believe that Ukraine will never join the European Union.

IRI Senior Director for Eurasia Stephen Nix says:

“Our data clearly shows that Ukrainians see closer relations with the West as their best chance of achieving sustainable peace and prosperity.”

The survey was conducted throughout Ukraine (except for the occupied territories of Donbass and Crimea) by order of Center for Analysis and Sociological Research of the International Republican Institute (IRI) February 17-21, 2024. 2000 residents of Ukraine aged 18 years and older were surveyed.

According to a survey conducted by the sociological service of the Razumkov Center from January 19 to 25, 84% of Ukrainians surveyed support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

At the same time, 2/3 of citizens in NATO member countries believe that their governments should continue to support Ukraine, writes “European truth”, such results of a survey commissioned by the alliance were announced by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during the presentation of the annual report on the assessment of the situation. He notedthat public opinion research shows high support for further assistance to Ukraine: “In total, in NATO countries, two-thirds of respondents want their countries to continue to support Ukraine. And this is important, because NATO countries provide 99% of all military assistance.”
