The Greek government did not allow Russian representatives to participate in the celebration of March 25

By order of Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis, the Greek government excluded Russian and Belarusian diplomats from participating in the celebration of the national anniversary of the 1821 revolution.

This happened for the 3rd time, despite the fact that Russia had previously occupied a prominent place in the celebrations, since the Greek state owes its existence to it! It was Russia that forced the naval battle of Navarino to take place, as a result of which Greece was able to gain independence.

In addition, the first president and author of the Greek Constitution, Ioannis Kapodistrias, was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tsarist Russia. To understand the role of Russia in the formation of Greece as an independent country, it is enough to go to the Athens Historical Museum, where the images of Greek politicians and military leaders show figures in the uniforms of Imperial Russia.

Even the way the Greeks were armed before the revolution was due to the Russians, who after Orlofiki convinced (by force) the Turks that no ship flying the Russian flag should be searched. After which the Greeks bought weapons, which they transported without interference, since the Russian flag flew on their ships.

Last Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent an immediate signal to all Greek diplomatic and consular institutions not to invite representatives of Russia and Belarus to this year’s events. In particular, the document read: “In connection with the national holiday on March 25, we ask you not to send invitations to representatives of the diplomatic and consular departments of Russia and Belarus to your events.”

Do not forget that three years ago, on days like these, Russia took an active part in the Greek celebrations on March 25 – it was the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution, and, despite the restrictions of Covid-19, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin visited Greece, and Katerina Sakellaropoulou praised Russia’s “great contribution” to the Greek struggle. The then mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, awarded the Russian high-ranking guest the Gold Medal for Services to the City of Athens.

Now, according to new narratives of Greek history (at least according to Kyriakos Mitsotakis And Nikos Dendias), an important role in gaining the independence of Greece was played by… Ukraine, which did not exist as a state either in the 18th or 19th centuries.
