A food loved by Greeks is in “conflict” with the Mediterranean diet, nutrition experts have found.
Souvlaki, moussaka and tzatziki are foods that foreigners commonly associate with the Greek diet, and admittedly many Greeks equate the dishes as “traditional” as well. But, alas, they are the furthest from the Mediterranean diet like anything else.
We’re not saying the above foods are our classic favorites, but they’re not what you’d call “healthy eating.” And all because red meat, among other things, is at the bottom of the list of the healthiest foods in the Mediterranean diet, which is mostly vegetarian.
In particular, healthy vegetable oils are at the base of the pyramid, olive oil is at the top, as well as whole grains and their derivatives. Next comes a variety of vegetables and fruits, and last comes red meat, as well as saturated animal fats and white carbohydrates such as potatoes, white bread and sugar.
