Metropolitan Seraphim of Kytira excommunicated deputies who supported LGBT people from the Church

The hierarch of the Orthodox Church wrote that Greece, “the first Orthodox country in the world, the country of Christian light and culture, adopted an anti-Christian law.”

Metropolitan Seraphim of Kythera and Antikythera of the Greek Orthodox Church excommunicated members of the Greek parliament who voted for the legalization of gay marriage.

In his In his message to the flock on the occasion of the beginning of the singing of the Triodion, Metropolitan Seraphim noted, that on such an important issue as the gay marriage vote, “the spirit of party discipline prevailed rather than the dictates of the Spirit of God.” Metropolitan Seraphim believes that the consequences of the adoption of the law on gay marriage “will directly or indirectly affect the entire society, our entire Orthodox people.”

According to him, “175 deputies shouldered a heavy responsibility with unpredictable consequences.” The hierarch, referring to the deputies who supported gay marriage, emphasized that “members of our Orthodox Church, in their overwhelming majority, opposed the Divine Law and the Church of God”, But “They did not think about it: “It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

“All the more worthy of praise are those who conscientiously opposed and showed responsibility before God and the Constitution of the Fatherland,” – Metropolitan Seraphim emphasized. The Bishop wrote that “I must declare to the deputies of our district, with the exception of one, that they have unfortunately scandalized the pious inhabitants of our islands of Kythera and Antikythera with their position.”

“Our Local Church, until they show true repentance for their unseemly actions, will not invite them to the official celebrations of our metropolitan district and will deprive them of Divine Communion if they come and ask for it at other services,” wrote Metropolitan Seraphim.

The hierarch cited as an example the case of Emperor Theodosius, whom Saint Ambrose of Milan admitted to communion only after penance and repentance for the bloodshed committed in Thessaloniki.

At the same time, Bishop Seraphim noted that the “crime” of the deputies “is undoubtedly more serious than in the time of Theodosius the Great, because in this case thousands and millions of our fellow citizens, including young people, are killed not physically, but mentally and spiritually, in our Greek Orthodox Homeland and around the world.” “The first Orthodox country in the world, the country of Christian light and culture, was the first to accept and vote for this anti-Christian and anti-constitutional bill, and with disgust and horror accepted the false praises of the powerful and immoral leaders of the world,” the hierarch wrote.

He once again recalled that the legalization of gay marriage “contradicts Divine law, the will and all-seeing plan of the Divine Creator, the laws of nature, God-created anthropology and ontology, as well as the physiological and spiritual conditions of human life and existence.”

“From a Christian point of view, homosexual life is a life against nature, sinful, wicked and defiled, which can only be corrected by sincere and decisive repentance and mercy, and the help of our merciful Lord and God,” Metropolitan Seraphim emphasized.

For this reason, he believes that the “issue of excommunication” of deputies has not only local, but church-wide significance and should be considered by the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece “and decided by 2/3 votes, in accordance with the Statute of our Church.”
