In India, a loaded train of 53 cars traveled 70 km without… a driver, passing 6 (!) stations.
How tells CNN Greece, it was a miracle that a major tragedy was avoided. The incident took place on February 25 and the train was traveling to Hoshiarpur district in Punjab. The train carrying stone chips stopped at Kathua to change drivers.
According to official information, the train began to move along the inclined surface of the railway tracks after the train driver and his assistant left the cab. A driverless train traveling at 100 kmph has caused panic in Punjab. He managed to drive through about six stations before stopping.
Immediately after being notified of the train’s movement, officials closed railroad crossings along its route. The train was reported to have stopped and no one was injured. Staff says:
“The train was stopped after a railway worker placed wooden blocks on the tracks to stop the train.”
Wooden blocks helped slow down the freight train. Officials are trying to find out the exact reason behind the movement of the train after stopping at Kathua to avoid similar incidents in the future.
