Manolis Kalaitzidakis spoke about the conditions of his son’s detention in the Padon hospital. The 45-year-old Old Believer also spoke about his wife Sevasti, who is still hiding with her younger children.
“Two policemen in bulletproof vests are guarding my son and taking him to a toilet with bars on the windows; they want to convince a 15-year-old child to abandon his family. What kind of revanchism is this? They don’t protect him, but this way they will drive him crazy.”, – said the man. And when asked about his wife, he commented: “It’s a good thing she hid where she hid, because otherwise we would have had four children in Baedong Hospital who are even younger. Other children are even younger. Imagine if a five-year-old child was escorted to the toilet by the police to play in the playground accompanied by guards. This is unheard of.”
About the fact that he still hasn’t been able to see his son, he said: “Apparently they didn’t want me to go and look at the situation so I wouldn’t report them. The policeman threatened the child that if he ran away, he would shoot him. My daughter, who accompanied the boy inside, told me about this, and I understood why they did not even allow me to contact him. We are talking about conditions like in Colombian prisons. The revanchism of the police, all their masculinity and professionalism – and they are going to take it out on the child.”
At the same time, the wife of an Old Believer, Sevasti, expressed her fear for the situation in which her family found herself in a statement for ANT1. “I am afraid for myself and my family, my situation is critical and no one respects him. I only think about my son, who is left alone and I cannot help him. I am waiting for a trial that will clear everything up and put an end to all this, what my family is going through unfairly. I want to find my family,” – she said.
From the editor. The situation with this community is very strange and incomprehensible. First of all, it is incomprehensible that the fierce persecution of the family of Old Believers (in the original they call themselves παλαιοχριστιανή – early Christians) by the authorities, as if there were not tens of thousands of other children living in Greece who do not go to school regularly (we are not just talking about gypsies). Also incomprehensible is the reaction of the media, which furiously attacked the family, accusing it of all mortal sins.
It seems that someone in the country’s leadership decided to divert attention from numerous problems in society related to high prices, laws on LGBT people, etc., but did it so “clumsily” that as a result they received the opposite reaction.
