Greek-flagged cargo ship narrowly escapes double missile attack near Yemen

All 23 crew members of the Greek-flagged cargo ship Sea Champion were reported Monday to be safe and healthy after the vessel narrowly escaped a double missile attack while sailing off the coast of Aden in Yemen.

The KKE sharply criticized the Greek frigate’s mission in the Red Sea: “Sending a Greek frigate to the Red Sea, under the pretext of safety of navigation and protection of merchant ships, draws the country even deeper into dangerous imperialist plans, which at this stage are directly related to supporting the murderous policies of the State of Israel.”said the Greek Communist Party.

Both missiles missed their target, exploding in the sea about 15 meters from the ship. The only damage was a broken porthole. According to the latest statement from the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy, five of the crew members are Greek. The vessel was carrying a bulk cargo of wheat from Argentina to Yemen.

Greek government sends warships to Red Sea against Houthis

Greek vessels became a “legitimate” target of the Houthis after a Greek warship joined a US-led coalition in the Red Sea called “Guardian of Prosperity” (“Φύλακας της Ευημερίας”). In addition to the United States, the alliance includes France, Great Britain, Bahrain, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Great Britain and the Seychelles.

“Both this and other missions of Greek warships in the Eastern Mediterranean and elsewhere within NATO formations prove the true purpose of the supply of warships and other weapons programs for which the Greek people pay in gold, – added to the party.- Greek ships or other military units have no business being involved in missions that have nothing to do with the defense of the country and the protection of its borders. Stop all participation immediately!”
