Why have apple prices soared?

Every third apple in Greece is Zagorin, but as climate change negatively affects the annual harvest, the Greek agricultural cooperative Zagorin intends to switch to growing other varieties.

The impact of climate change and inclement weather reduced the harvest of famous apples (including those for export) by 30% last year and is forcing the Agricultural Cooperative of Zagora-Pilio to consider planting other varieties of apple trees that are less sensitive to high temperatures, such as Gala and Fuji.

According to information from OT.gr, for this year’s harvest was negatively affected by the unseasonal flowering of trees last spring, as well as the passage of Hurricane Daniel. The president of the cooperative explained that “the region accounts for 8-10% of the total apple production in Greece and requires 12,000 hectares of land to maintain high productivity levels.”

Although some of the fruit trees will be restored after the hurricane and bad weather with the help of the Greek state, nothing can be changed – about 10% of the plants are irretrievably lost. As a result of supply disruptions and rising production and transportation costs, apple prices increased by 20%.

The Zagora-Pelio Agricultural Cooperative was founded in 1916 by 199 residents of Zagora, a mountainous region located in the mid-eastern region of mainland Greece, and currently has 800 producers and members. In 1996, the European Union recognized apples as a product with “protected designation of origin“*.
