The bill was approved by the Greek Parliament with 176 votes in favor, 76 voted against, and two deputies were “present.” Thus, marriage of same-sex couples is now the law of the state.

How the parties voted

MPs from the PASOK party – “Movement for Change” voted for the bill, while 11 deputies abstained from voting. In particular, the following abstained: Liakouli, Gnaris, Kazani, Poulas, Michaelides, Paraskevaides, Staraka, Konstantinopoulos, Baran, Panas, Nikolaides. Only Pavlos Polakis was absent from SYRIZA. Two minority members were absent from the New Left.

What does the new state law provide for?

The new law, as explained by one of the authors of the bill, State Minister Akis Skertos, “introduces equality in civil marriage, that is, access to the institution of civil marriage for all Greek citizens, without discrimination and regardless of sexual orientation.”

New law “protects the interests of children by regulating family law issues in families of same-sex couples. MWe do not extend the right to medically assisted reproduction (and surrogacy) to male couples.”.
