Greece: explosions of underwater power cables and water pipelines – what’s happening

Regular damage power cablesthat will connect Crete with Attica And water supply pipelines in Aegina cause concern.

On the water pipeline connecting the mainland and the island of Aegina, it has already been recorded fourth case of sabotage. Currently intelligence services suggest the possibility that some foreign power.

ADMIE subsidiary “Ariadne Interconnection” filed a complaint with the competent police department in connection with the incident of sabotage discovered the day before yesterday in the electrical connection project between Crete and Attica that it is implementing.

According to the corresponding report, found cut cables, which affected both the implementation of the project and the electrical safety of Crete. The operator and the competent authorities took immediate measures to investigate the incident and protect the project. The electrical connection between Crete and Attica is a project of great importance for the energy security of the island and the subsequent reduction in the cost of electricity production.

Concerning Aeginathen today the governor of the region of Attica Nikos Hardalias filed a lawsuit head of the Piraeus prosecutor’s office against all those responsible in sabotage of an underwater water pipeline. The regional governor submitted to the prosecutor’s office materials from reports from the competent services of the region confirming the claim, as well as relevant inspection reports, in order to quickly begin an investigation into the commission of any criminal acts against all those responsible.

It’s already fourth act of sabotage on this pipeline connecting Aegina with Salamis, as a result of which direct water supply to the island will be stopped from January 24. “We will not sit idly by. And if anyone thinks that they will play with the health of citizens, then they are mistaken. Everything will come out,” said the governor of the Attica region after submitting the report.

Constant attempts to sabotage the undersea pipeline, which has been supplying water to Aegina for two years, have been noted since 2020 and to this day do not provide an answer to the question of who is behind them.

Construction of the undersea pipeline began in 2020. That same year, unknown people went at night and drilled holes in the pipes, even before water began to flow to the island. The second sabotage was recorded in May 2022, when explosives were planted, and the explosion occurred just a few hundred meters from the coast of Salamis.

Saboteurs blew up an underwater water supply to Aegina

Divers from a boat and an autonomous underwater vehicle investigating the site found that explosives had created a meter-long crater next to the pipeline protection.

On the night of July 13, 2022, unknown persons installed and activated explosive device on an underwater pipeline, resulting in a hole with a diameter of 8 centimeters. “They planted explosives on the pipeline at a depth of 14 meters, 300 meters from the shore, which means that the criminals were divers, they came by boat, it was a very well organized action to destroy the pipeline.”. It was third pipeline sabotagewhich starts from Perani in Salamis and ends in the port of Leontio in Aegina, said Alexandros Petropoulos, project manager, at the time.

At the same time, the level of execution of sabotage shows that we are clearly talking about about an organized group of underwater saboteurs of several peoplewell trained and qualified, with appropriate special equipment at their disposal, which are usually available at the state level.

For example: sabotage on the Attica-Crete electric cable was carried out at great depths (several hundred meters), and for such an action it is already necessary, at a minimum, to have a submarine and the appropriate equipment!

Regarding the Aegina pipeline, at least one sabotage occurred near Perani on Salamis. However, Perani is located next to the main naval base of the Greek Navy on the island of Salamis, since it is located immediately after Selenia, and the pipeline runs a few hundred meters from the beach.

Perhaps these acts of sabotage are part of an exercise to infiltrate the Greek naval base in Salamis, and the team carrying out the sabotage is preparing for a more serious attack that may occur at X hour? Judging by what is happening, there is a high probability that foreign intelligence services are involved in these sabotages, since the incidents are clearly interconnected and are the work of structures associated with a foreign state known to all residents of Greece.

In any case, the state must act immediately and find those responsible.
