Stores will open tomorrow, the second Sunday of the winter shopping season.
Estimated opening hours of retail outlets are 11:00-18:00. Shopping centers and department stores will be open from 11:00 to 20:00. According to trade market experts, the “progress of sales” has so far been rather restrained. Vice-president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce Nikos Koyoumtzis attributed this to an “inflation problem” and the fact that the discount season was preceded by the holiday season and people “spent” a lot.
“Increasing food prices have reduced disposable income as we see in our cash registers,” Mr. Koyoumtzis said, adding that “the funds were spent during the holiday season.”
Meanwhile, inspections at stores continue. Development Minister Kostas Skrekas stressed that “a fight will be given” to unfair speculation. At the same time, the official emphasized that if violations are detected, strict fines will be imposed.
