Student rally in the center of Athens

Currently, a university rally is taking place in the center of Athens against the bill on “non-state universities” and vocational education, in which about 2,000 students and schoolchildren are participating.

It is estimated that more than 2,000 people took part in the procession.

Roads are blocked

Streets in the center are blocked as protesters move from Syntagma Square along Penepistimiou Avenue and return along Akademias and Stadiou streets. Student rallies are also taking place in Thessaloniki and Patras.

Statement ΟΛΜΕ

Board of the Panhellenic Union of Secondary and Special Education (ΟΛΜΕ) reiterates its negative position on private universities and the draft law on vocational education, and calls on everyone to take part massively in the university rally on Thursday 18/1 (voting day on the bill on private universities and vocational schools) at 12.00 on the Propylaea. To facilitate the participation of colleagues, we are announcing a three-hour break from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

What students say

preview

“We, students, demand that our education be exclusively public, free and modern. That is why we, the overwhelming majority, rejected this bill, which introduces private universities. We will not tolerate the right to education, the right to study, depending on the wallet of each families”.

“Today we filled the roads. This rally is larger than the one that took place last Thursday. There are many of us, more of us, and we will continue to condemn this bill.”
