An interview with Maria Vorontsova, Putin’s daughter, caused a mixed reaction (video)

On the eve of the New Year, Vladimir Putin’s eldest daughter gave a long interview in Russia, although she rarely speaks publicly.

Media in Germany called its “shocking”. Vyacheslav Shulenin, head of the Moscow Center for Innovative Technologies in Healthcare, spoke with 38-year-old Vorontsova. He introduced his counterpart as a leading researcher at the National Medical Research Center for Endocrinology of the Russian Ministry of Health and Deputy Dean for Science at the Faculty of Fundamental Medicine of Lomonosov Moscow State University. She answered questions in the pre-New Year episode of the Russian podcast #ProScience, intended for young scientists and aspiring startupers.

During the conversation with Shulenin, the eldest daughter of the Russian president spoke about science and medicine, her research in the genetic field. Talking about the treatment of patients in Russia, especially those who became disabled due to severe chronic diseases, she noted:

“Russian society, with our principles of life, with our culture, with our religion… is still not such an economic-centric society: we are, to a greater extent, a human-centric society. For us, the highest value is still the value of human life.”

However, during the interview she did not say a word about the war being waged by Russia and never mentioned her father. However, it has long been known that the Kremlin keeps details about members of Vladimir Putin’s family secret. But in this interview, Maria Vorontsova shared some points from her biography. For example, she said that since childhood she dreamed of becoming a doctor, but after school she wanted to study as an economist. In the end, I chose medicine and entered the Faculty of Fundamental Medicine of Moscow State University:

“I feel comfortable in my profession, I would choose it again. And exactly along this path: first a doctor, a doctor plus science, then a little economics.”

Maria spoke about her interests in literature, music and sports:

“My range of interests is extremely wide: from creativity to sports. I am inspired by everything that is beautiful: paintings, museums, theaters, music. Music is an important part of my life – both classical and jazz… I try to devote several hours a week to sports, in including seasonal – surfing, skiing.”

Vorontsova lived and studied in Germany for several years, then in Russia; with her husband, Dutch businessman Jorrit Faassen, she was in the Netherlands until 2015. Then she returned to Moscow. After the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, both daughters of the Russian president, Maria Vorontsova and Ekaterina Tikhonova, found themselves under sanctions EU, UK and USA: their bank accounts are frozen, entry into the territory of these countries is prohibited. When asked about her dream, the daughter of the Russian president said:

“My dream as a doctor is to cure chronic diseases. My dream as a scientist is to find out where life came from on planet Earth, or how thought appears. As a person, I would dream that people would have the opportunity to know themselves and move closer to the development of a holistic, mature personality “In order for us to better understand each other, communicate better with each other. A lot of problems are due to many misunderstandings and misunderstandings of ourselves.”

Why did the interview with Putin’s eldest daughter cause outrage in the German media? Journalists and others rated it as outrageous, strange and shocking. An article on the website of the German publication Der Spiegel was published under the headline: “Putin’s daughter gave a strange interview about the value of human life.” Its author notes that an interview with Putin’s daughter is a huge rarity. Maria Vorontsova almost never speaks out publicly:

“Vladimir Putin never shows members of his family in the media, his personal life is a taboo, as Russian journalists know. The fact that in her interview Vorontsova calls Russia a “human-centric state”, and about her father and the war he is waging against Ukraine , Vorontsova was never mentioned, causing outrage outside Russia.”

The German television channel ntv was no less categorical, calling the interview stunning: “These are shocking statements against the backdrop of crimes and the number of victims of Russia’s war against Ukraine.” Journalists pay attention to Vorontsova’s words about her dream and call it cynical that the topic of war is not raised in the interview:

“Instead, endocrinologist Vorontsova talks about how medicine has advanced throughout the world and talks about her literary, musical and sports interests. And what inspires her: paintings, museums, theaters, music.”

The publication also lists the positions that Maria Vorontsova currently holds in Russia:

  • Since 2019, he has been a member of the council for the implementation of the Federal Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Genetic Technologies.
  • He is on the board of directors of Nomeko, which is researching the “Russian genome” in one of the scientific laboratories in St. Petersburg.
  • He is an adviser to Vladimir Putin on genetic engineering.

However, the German publication Merkur writes about the latter, noting that the Kremlin keeps all the details of her life secret:

“Putin himself never confirmed that she was his daughter. And in all interviews he called her and her sister “these women.”

And the tabloid Bild did not ignore the video interview with Vladimir Putin’s daughter:

“She never appears in public. And now she suddenly gave an interview: 38-year-old Maria Vorontsova, at the height of the war against Ukraine, gives a big interview in Russia, and what Putin’s daughter says about Russia, about her personal life, causes a big shock.”

The German Frankfurter Rundschau published an article reporting some details from the biography of Putin’s eldest daughter. According to the publication, Vorontsova has made a scientific career, holds a number of important positions and, in particular, is a co-founder of the Nomeko company, which is participating in Russia’s largest investment project in the medical field. In 2022, the profit of this enterprise amounted to about 855 million rubles.
