South Korea will stop eating dogs (video)

The South Korean Parliament has passed a law banning the production and consumption of dog meat.

How reports Yonhap, 208 deputies supported a bill banning the breeding and sale of dogs for meat, two deputies abstained. The ruling People Power Party and the main opposition Democratic Party jointly pushed for the ban, amid growing awareness of animal rights and an increase in the number of pet owners in the country.

In order for those employed in the now prohibited production to be able to change jobs, the bill calls for providing them with subsidies. However, the new law does not mean that dog dishes will disappear from the menu starting tomorrow. The transition period will last for three years, the law will come into force in 2027. Violators of the new law could face two years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won ($22,768).

Government statistics indicate that there are approximately 1,150 dog farms and 1,600 restaurants serving dog meat in South Korea. In October 2019, the city’s last dog slaughterhouse closed its doors in Seoul, the capital of South Korea.
