Elon Musk: his posts in Greek and their meaning

Tesla and X mogul Elon Musk often uses Greek words or letters in his posts on the X website (formerly known as Twitter), leaving millions of his followers trying to decipher their hidden meaning.

In January 2023, he tweeted “Omega” (Ω), the last letter of the Greek alphabet, and his post went viral, receiving 7.3 million views in a few hours. His followers on social media tried to interpret the meaning he wanted to convey to people. Some of those who knew that omega was the last letter of the Greek alphabet initially assumed that the businessman was about to finish something.

Some argued that his post symbolizes his last place in a group of items, while others wrote that it was an attempt by the South African billionaire to show that “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end”. Some joked that he was referring to the watch company, others thought it symbolized the end of Twitter, or went so far as to translate the post as “end of coronavirus”.

Musk himself soon after explained that he used the letter “Omega” as is customary in physics: The SI unit of electrical resistance is the ohm (in English Ohm), which is denoted as (Ω) and was named in honor of the German physicist Georg Ohm and is defined as 1Ω = 1V/1A. Resistance, by definition, is the opposite of conductivity.

The letter Omega (Ω) is used as a symbol in biology, biochemistry and chemistry, physics, computer science and mathematics. In sociology it is used to refer to the lowest ranking member of a group.

This isn’t the first time the entrepreneur and investor has posted something on Twitter that has given his followers pause. In October 2022, he tweeted a single word in Greek: “dialectic,” causing millions of his followers to look it up in dictionaries. The cryptic post prompted more than seven thousand messages by the next morning on his official profile, as there appeared to be many questions about Musk’s meaning behind the word.

Dialectics, also known as the dialectical method, is a debate between two or more people who have different views on a topic but want to prove the truth through reasoned arguments. In classical Greek philosophy, dialectic is a form of reasoning based on the dialogue of arguments and counterarguments supporting propositions (theses) and counterproposals (counterarguments).

Another recent tweet from Elon Musk upset Turkish users of the platform. The Tesla founder posted a meme on Twitter depicting a Byzantine soldier lying in bed and thinking, “did he lock the gate”and under the image – 1453, Constantinople.

His message raised eyebrows among many Turkish users, who wondered whether it was positive or negative. And also why Musk named the date of the fall of Istanbul and why he called it Constantinople and not Istanbul.
