Citizens’ dissatisfaction with rampant crime and high prices worries the government ahead of the European Parliament elections

According to polls, internal security and the collapse of law and order, along with rising prices, are the most important issues for Greek citizens, and that is why Mitsotakis replaced the entire leadership of the Ministry of Citizen Protection, reinstating Michalis Chrysochoidis.

It can be said that he did almost nothing during his previous term in office. Absolutely true, but under his successors the situation became even worse, so Mitsotakis gave preference to someone who has long been an expert in this area.

But the problem with internal security is that it has now been lost everywhere. Not only in the center of Athens, but also in the suburbs, as well as in Thessaloniki and in the cities of the province, criminals feel like they are in their own home, without any fear of the toothless police, who are mainly busy protecting senior officials and members of parliament.

Criminals feel at ease everywhere: in universities, in schools, on the streets. There is not a single place that a resident of Athens, Thessaloniki, Lamia or Patras can call safe. Serious crimes are committed almost everywhere, at any age, regardless of class and income level (the student who tortured a 14-year-old boy in Agia Paraskevi, along with his accomplices, studies in a private school). In short, Greek society seems to be in a state of excitement.

Just as it is unlikely that anything will change in matters of high cost. Surveys to be published soon will show that Greek family pays 200% more for baby milkthan any other European country, and for most goods Greece is more expensive than other European countries!

But such a high cost cannot be justified, since in many of these countries wages are much higher than in Greece. As if there weren’t enough problems in the country, the government urgently wants to same-sex marriage and procreation lawagainst which the church is up in armsplaying an important role in Greek society.

Opinion polls on the issue were harsh. Society is concerned not so much about marriage (it does not approve of it) as about the possibility of adoption of children by same-sex couples. The government shelved the bill while it reconsidered its provisions as public opinion polls showed strong public dissatisfaction.

However, it is believed that the Greek state will confidently accept adoptions through other European countries, especially since Greece is under severe pressure from both Brussels and Washington.

In addition, in the near future the government will put to a vote a new Criminal Code, in which all punishments will become more severe, and now even for minor offenses they will serve a sentence. This bill should bring peace of mind to citizens who believe that the state is taking a restrained approach to crime.

After all, crime and the Criminal Code are interconnected. If someone robs his neighbors and gets out of prison, he has no reason to stop doing it, since he is not punished, but only given decorative punishments.

At the same time, according to the Ministry of Citizens Protection, the new minister will introduce a law that will prohibit the transfer of police officers to rural areas and thereby will strengthen major urban centers that need it. It is unclear, however, what will now happen to the residents of small towns and villages, especially those where gypsy camps are located nearby. After all, according to the laws of Greece, citizens are prohibited from repelling thieves and robbers.
