A special agency will combat cyber attacks in Greece

National Cybersecurity Authority planned to be created in Greece, draft law rendered for public comment by the Ministry of Digital Governance.

A special agency will be responsible for managing and preventing cyber attacks, reports the BIRN portal. This decision was influenced by waves attacks on Greek government bodies last year and the year before.

How writes “European Truth”, the newly created body will expand the functions of the Directorate General for Cyber ​​Security of the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance. It will consist of two directorates general, one of which will be responsible for personnel planning, and the other for operational activities. It is planned to appoint a person “with a high scientific level and professional experience in the field of cybersecurity” as the head of the body, whose term of office will be five years, as proposed by the relevant ministry by government decision.

Greece’s National Cyber ​​Security Authority will fine digital service providers €15,000 if they fail to report or report a cyberattack incident late. In case of repeated violation, the fine will increase to 200 thousand euros.

Large fines also await those telecom operators who do not take measures to counter cyber attacks or do not cooperate with cyber investigations. For the first time, the fine will be 50 thousand euros, for a repeated violation – up to 200 thousand euros.

In reality, Greece does not have the means to prevent or investigate cyber incidents, writes BIRN, recalling a number of cyber attacks in recent months in the country.

Until October 2024, Member States EU must implement Directive 2022/2555, which aims to establish a high level of cybersecurity, introduce stricter measures to combat cyber attacks and rules for reporting cyber incidents. In December, the permanent representatives of European Union member states reached a preliminary agreement on the Cyber ​​Solidarity Regulation, which provides for enhanced response to cyber incidents and cyber cooperation in the EU.
