Famous Greek singer Vasilis Karras has died


Popular Greek singer Vassilis Karras, who battled cancer, passed away at the age of 70.

According to the information, Vassilis Karras died shortly after 17:00 on Sunday December 24, after being hospitalized with coronavirus in the intensive care unit at Diavalkaniko Hospital in Thessaloniki. Next to the famous singer were his beloved wife Christina and daughter Irini.

For decades, Vasilis Karras was one of the most popular folk singers, with thousands of fans filling every venue where he performed.

In addition to packed nightclubs, the singer achieved unique results. He managed to get into the Guinness Book of Records when he attracted 17,000 people to the Arena stadium in Sofia (Bulgaria), while another 5,000 spectators were left without tickets. He became the first European artist to fill the stadium.

Vasilis Karras (real name Vasilis Kesoglidis) was born in Kokkinochori, Kavala, on November 12, 1953. He has two brothers, Damianos and Anastasia. At the age of 10, he and his family left for Thessaloniki.

His nightclub debut took place in 1969. He was only 16 years old when he stepped onto the stage of the Prosfigas nightclub in Evosmos, Thessaloniki. At the same time, he worked as a car mechanic, which was his second great love after singing. He also worked as a railway driver in Thessaloniki, which is reflected in his song I Love Me, I.

His professional career began in Thessaloniki, and then he conquered Athens and all Greeks who love folk singing, both within the country and abroad.

His albums went gold and platinum, and his biggest commercial success was the album M έχεις έχεις Kanei Alistis with lyrics and music by Michalis Rakintzis, which sold over 180,000 copies.

Vassilis Karras has collaborated with many composers and songwriters such as Dimitris Rakitzis, Phoebus, Giorgos Theofanous, Alekos Chrysovergis and Spyros Yatras, Evi Droutsa, Panos Phalaras, Christos Dantis, Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Elias Filippou, Michalis Hatzigiannis, Christos Nikolopoulos.

He has also performed as a duet with many singers such as Marianti Kefala, Pix Lax, Constantina, Angela Demetriou, Tolis Voskopoulos, Nikos Zoidakis, Katie Garbi, Despina Vandi, Elli Kokkinou, Irini Mercouri, Paola, Pantelis Pantelidis and George Cacosayo. He collaborated with most of them in concert programs.

In addition to singing, Vasilis Karras was also a composer and lyricist, writing songs for many Greek artists.

In addition to singing, Vasilis Karras was very fond of the farm he created, which became his personal refuge. The Carras estate is located at an altitude of 200 meters at the foot of Paggayo and began its work in the 2000s, producing the purest products – olives, cherries, figs, grapes, walnuts, etc.
