ARSIS: "Don’t give money to street children"

The ARSIS organization calls not to give money to child beggars – it is better to give them something they need.

By giving money, you encourage child labor, the organization’s employees say. If you want to help the homeless, share food and water, donate toys or clothes.

ARSIS – Association for Social Support of Youth, is an independent non-governmental public organization founded in 1992 and operating in Athens, Thessaloniki and other regions of Greece (Kozani, Volos, Alexandroupoli, Ioannina, etc.). ARSIS appeals to everyone on the eve of the holidays: children should not work on the street, and on holidays the number of beggars especially increases, writes newsbeast.gr.

According to the organization, from September last year to November, employees of the ARSIS Youth Support Center (KYN) identified 88 young children of both sexes working on the streets of Thessaloniki. As it turned out, for 55 of them it is work, and the remaining 33 are children who are associated with the phenomenon of the end of compulsory schooling or are at risk of exploitation. These children come from Albania, Bulgaria, Romania and Greece. ARSIS says:

“Children often work in dangerous conditions, long hours and with little financial compensation. It is vital for all of us – citizens, societies, governments and international organizations – to work together to eradicate the phenomenon of child labor.”

ARSIS advises those who want to help children to give them something useful: clothes or shoes, toys, food.
