The Immigration Ministry’s amendment to legalize thousands of illegal immigrants was officially adopted despite serious disagreements within the ruling New Democracy party.

Only Antonis Samaras, a representative of the New Democracy party, voted against the bill he announced, but his opposition turned out to be a “voice crying in the wilderness” as it was not even remotely enough to change the fate of the vote.

At the same time, despite the warnings, ND will not demand the expulsion of Adonis Samaras from the party, since it is a tradition for former prime ministers to differentiate themselves from such decisions.

Konstantinos Mitsotakis under Evert pursued his own independent policy, as did Konstantinos Mitsotakis under Karamanlis; and they did not exclude them because they were former prime ministers. Especially during the crisis between Souflas and Manos in March 1997, the father of the current Prime Minister was not expelled from the ranks of New Democracy because he was a former Prime Minister, and from this it follows that an ex-Prime Minister has the right to express different opinions .

However, Greek political scientists are confident that such an obvious and ostentatious disagreement with A. Samaras is used by the party leadership to balance the right-wing audience of New Democracy. In particular, 262 deputies from New Democracy, SYRIZA, PASOK, KKE, New Left and the Course of Freedom party voted for this provision, 32 deputies from the Greek Solution, Niki and Spartans, as well as A. Samaras voted against, and independent MP from the Freedom Course party Areti Papaioannou voted in favor.

Five MPs were absent from the proceedings, including PASOK Chios MP Stavros Michaelides, who reportedly expressed objections to the amendment. Also absent were Syriza MP Elena Akrita, who is reportedly suffering from Covid, and Spartans MPs Georgios Aspiotis, Petros Dimitriadis and Michalis Gavgiotakis.
