Residents of Xanthi protested demanding justice

Thousands of inhabitants of Xanthi took to the streets today to protest against the tragic death 18-year-old Aisa, who was walking her dog and was hit by a car driven by a police officer.

According to xanthinea.gr, citizens gathered in the center of Xanthi and marched to the region’s police headquarters, shouting slogans related to the administration of justice in connection with the tragic incident. Watch video of the protest:

Ayse was fatally injured when she was hit by a car driven by a 34-year-old policeman in Paleo Zygos Xanthi while she was walking her dog. The unfortunate girl, despite the incredible efforts of the doctors to save her life, died in the Kavala hospital (where she was transferred from the General Hospital of Xanthi).

According to the initial version, after the accident the culprit hurried to escape, leaving the unfortunate girl to bleed on the asphalt. However, new information released by the president of the Xanthi Bar Association, Katerina Hatzifotiadou, states that the man called an ambulance and remained at the scene until she picked up the girl. “I don’t believe there will be a cover-up because he is a police officer. Everything is being investigated and we look forward to seeing how the case develops.”– Chatzifotiada commented to Delta Television.

However, judging by the mass demonstration, city residents do not believe either in the lawyer’s statements or in the administration of justice. The fact is that, according to eyewitnesses who saw the accident with their own eyes, the policeman not only did not try to provide first aid to the girl, but also tried to hide his involvement in the accident by running away from the scene of the accident until his colleagues got on his trail due to contradictions in his testimony!

The 34-year-old policeman was arrested and confessed to his crime while in custody at the Xanthi police station. In the original case, he was charged with causing a traffic accident by abandoning the victim, but he was also charged with negligent manslaughter. A disciplinary investigation was carried out by order of the National Police and the officer was suspended.

The news of the girl’s death has caused sadness in the local community of Xanthi, which is shocked by the tragic incident. The Mufti of Xanthi issued a statement of condolences over the death of Ayse:

“To our great regret, we have received information that a 19-year-old girl from Zygos Xanthi so unjustly lost her life as a result of a car accident that occurred last Wednesday. We wish that the merciful and powerful Allah will grant her a place in Paradise. Her family, loved ones and friends, we wish God to give them courage and strength.”
