This year the price of the Christmas table will increase by 10%

“Dear Christmas” – not figuratively, but in the most literal sense, awaits the residents of Greece this year.

According to preliminary expert estimates, everything indicates that Greek consumers will have to “put their hand deep in their pockets” in order to be able to properly set the festive table. No worse than in other years.

Although the holidays are still almost a month away, food prices are rising. At the same time, prices for basic goods, which are raw materials, increased by 20%. Consumers have already started their introductory visits to the market and even went shopping, fearing that prices might rise even more as the holidays approach.

Compared to last year, the increase in prices for fats and oils reaches 26%, sugar – 8.2%, dairy products – 7%. According to market participants, this the increase affects the prices of a number of products, including holiday sweetssince only fresh butter, according to them, has risen in price from 9.5 euros per kilogram last year to 11-11.5 euros this year.

Since honey prices have also increased, the traditional “Christmas sweets” – kurabiye and melomakarona – will cost 2-3 euros more compared to last year.

Simultaneously prices for meat and vegetables are going through the roof, and frozen turkey, already available in some supermarkets, has become more expensive by about one euro per kilogram. Its price ranges from 5.52 euros to 5.82 euros per kilogram, when last year the average price was 4.90 euros.

Due to the current unfavorable factors, fires and floods, a critical situation is observed in livestock and agricultural production. In addition, constantly galloping inflation suggests that the cost of all products that make up the holiday table will increase.

In some cases, growth is expected to be double-digit, resulting in year-over-year value increases of up to 10%.
