An elderly farmer spent her personal savings to buy "Ambulance"

89-year-old retired farmer Athena Papachristou from Mesolongi spent all her savings – 65 thousand euros – to donate a new and fully equipped ambulance local hospital.

The car was immediately handed over to the local ambulance service, with her and her late husband’s names on the door.

She said she made the donation in memory of her late husband. According to her, many years ago, when there was no such ambulance service in Messolonghi, she often had to transport her sick husband to hospitals in Ioannina, Patras or Athens on her own and with great difficulty.

Athena Papachristou did not ask for any special favors or privileges for her donation. Except for one thing: when an ambulance drives along the street where she lives, let it turn on the siren!

The President of the Panhellenic Ambulance Service made a special trip to Messolonghi to honor the contribution of the elderly woman.

He assured her that thanks to her generous donation, Ambulance’s rescuers would now be able to provide even better services to the people of Messolonghi.

He thanked her warmly and wished that others would follow her example.

The event became known from an ambulance employee who posted on social networks:

“Mrs. Athena Papachristou is neither a ship owner nor an industrialist… She is a retired farmer. After many decades of work, she raised money and decided to donate an ambulance worth about 65,000 euros to the city of Messolonghi… An example to follow… That, What the state could not do, Mrs. Athena did… Thank you!”. written by Vangelis Moularas.
