The famous Greek poet Constantine Cavafy (1863-1933) has a “new home” in the center of Athens, where the public and researchers will be able to view a large collection of his works and personal belongings.
Founded by the Onassis Foundation, Plaka’s crown jewel, the Cavafy Archive, will open its gates to visitors on Wednesday, November 22, 2023.
The goal was to create a space to store the poet’s works and books, his personal effects and furniture, surrounded by works of art, allowing for a deeper understanding of his growing influence on artists from his era to the present day, a space open to researchers and the public, open to all, noted, in particular, in the fund.
The Cavafy Archive houses more than 2,000 items, including poetry manuscripts, personal effects and furniture, the poet’s literary and personal archive, including 966 books from his library, and a collection of documents and art related to Cavafy.
Cavafy’s consciously individual style established him as one of the most striking characters not only in Greek but also in Western poetry.
