A 16-year-old girl ended up in intensive care after trying homemade "mood improvers"

The case of a 16-year-old girl found unconscious in the Vyronas district (Athens) received wide public attention.

The victim was taken to the hospital, and she immediately ended up in intensive care, as doctors stated her condition as “life-threatening.” As it became known, an underage girl was given a powerful cocktail of “drugs” made from battery fluid and bleach(!). A cocktail of potent, dangerous substances landed her in the intensive care unit.

According to preliminary information, the minor went “to the hut” with a friend and a company of six people who supplied her with drugs, including “shisha” (“σίσα”) or “coke for the poor.” After taking the dose, the girl lost consciousness and could well have died if the ambulance had not arrived in time.

Law enforcement officers arrested six people, including two minors, involved in drug trafficking. Members of the spiral took their victims to one of their homes in the Vironas area so that they could purchase and “use” illegal substances there. According to statements on the ANT1 channel by Athens police spokesman Nikos Rigas, the girl was injured as a result of “testing” homemade drugs.

Nikos Rigas urges parents of teenagers to call the police if they notice any changes in their children’s behavior – “there is no shame in asking for help.”

Two girls arrived at a private house in the evening and were initially given cannabis by drug dealers. After this, one of them began to use everything that was offered to her, including the so-called “shisha”. Waking up in the morning, her friend discovered that they were alone in the house, and the girl was unconscious and bleeding from her nose. She immediately called an ambulance. Doctors rushed the teenager to the hospital, where doctors tried to keep her alive.

The girl’s friend, in the presence of a psychologist, said that her friend used “shisha” and the substance “lyrica”: “In the morning we all woke up, but she didn’t. I saw her lying on her back on the bed, unconscious, with her eyes open, and blood flowing from her nose. I got scared and called an ambulance.”

Sheesha has become a headache for the Drug Enforcement Administration because most of its operations find this illegal drug in teenagers. The mixture is a deadly cocktail. In 2021, drug prosecutors managed to deal a serious blow to the shishi markets in Metaxourgio and Kipseli. In October 2019, this was preceded by a police operation, during which a criminal drug distribution scheme was eliminated. The base was located in an abandoned building opposite ASOEE.

A dose of “shisha” costs two to three euros, preparation requires special knowledge, and use can lead to instant death. “No one knows which came first: the Greek financial crisis or shisha, the drug known as the “poor man’s cocaine,” said a 2013 Guardian article in which users of the drug described the tragic consequences of its use. “When it comes to drugs, this is the worst. It burns your guts out, makes you aggressive and drives you crazy,” said Maria, a former heroin addict, “but it’s cheap and easy to get, and everyone does it.”

Addicts and officials alike describe the drug as a variant of crystal methamphetamine, whose ability to drive users into a state of passion (unmotivated aggression) is enhanced by substances with which it is often mixed: battery acid, motor oil and even shampoo.

“The dose makes you want to kill,” said another addict. “You can kill without even realizing you did it.” Many users who took Shisha have already died.”
