A new record was set during the Athens Classic Marathon


Edwin Kiptoo from Kenya set a new record during the Athens Marathon, improving by three seconds from his previous achievement nine years ago.

The anniversary Athens Classic Marathon took place in the Greek capital last weekend – the fortieth one. The first to cover the 42-kilometer distance, starting in the city of Marathon and finishing at the Panathinaikos stadium, where the first ever Olympic Games were held, was Kenyan runner Edwin Kiptou. The women’s winner was Soukena Atanan from Morocco.

Edwin Kiptoo finished in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 34 seconds. The second was his compatriot Kilimo Lokitham, the third was the Kenyan Henry Tukor Kitsana. The women’s race was won by the Moroccan athlete Soukena Atanan, reaching the finish line 2 hours 31 minutes and 52 seconds after the start. Perez Jepchirchir from Kenya came second, and Greek Gloria Privilegio took bronze.

More than 70,000 people of all ages took part in the various races of the Athens Marathon this year.
