Coming soon to Russia "media police" to control materials on the Internet

In Russia, specially trained media police will soon be responsible for blocking information on the Internet; now these functions are performed by Roskomnadzor.

In August, this department announced that since the beginning of 2022 it had identified and blocked 30 thousand calls for mass unrest, 190 thousand materials with false information, 85 thousand materials with elements of extremist content.

Future specialists will undergo training at the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA) under the President of the Russian Federation. In the course of their activities, media police will identify and block “extremist and destructive materials,” as well as pirated content on the Internet.

Upon completion of training, they will receive one of the specializations: investigation of offenses against citizens (cyberbullying, stalking), legal entities (piracy) or the state (extremism). Officially, the general direction is called “Media support of state interests and national security”, writes publication “Izvestia”. Lidiya Malygina, head of the department of media support of state interests and national security at the Institute of Law and National Security of RANEPA, says:

“The tasks of “media security” include combating the propaganda of terrorism, the ideology of criminal culture, suicide among teenagers, and insulting the feelings of believers. The program is being implemented with the support of the National Anti-Terrorism Committee.”

Roskomnadzor says that in the last six months alone, the volume of “negative content” on the Internet has grown by more than 16%.
