Bonuses for those who reported tax evaders

The government, due to the failure of control mechanisms to stop tax evasion, forces citizens to inform on each other and even promises them a “bonus” of 3,000 euros!

Media reported that on October 31, the cabinet will discuss the issue of cash rewards for those who report cases of tax evasion and bad checks through the e-appodixi app.

The maximum award is reportedly considered to be close to €3,000, and the minimum award is likely to be calculated based on the amount of “illegal” tax concealment (eg a multiple of the receipt amount). However, in any case, in order to obtain the right to compensation, the complaint must be voiced and its validity must be proven, i.e. concealment of taxable materials and tax evasion must be established.

According to available data, the appodixi platform, operating since September 2022, has received more than 135 thousand complaints, the majority of which – 55% – are anonymous. The goal of AADE is to “slow down” “false” transactions, and therefore further reduce tax evasion, since those who conceal turnover and issue checks from “fake” cash registers will be identified and subject to statutory fines and blocking.

Complaints made through the new e-complaint platform introduced today by the Anti-Avoidance Establishment (AADE) will also be linked to a cash reward over time, it is understood.

The platform comes into effect from October 30, 2023: eAnother new AADE digital platform becomes available to taxpayers from today – “Citizen Complaints” (“Καταγγελίες πολιτών”). It is posted on the myAADE digital portal (myaade.gov.gr) in the section Εφαρμογές/Δημοφιλείς Εφαρμογές/Καταγγελίες and now allows interested parties to submit their complaints and information automatically, anonymously or on their own behalf by selecting one or more of the following thematic categories:

  • Corruption is a violation of honesty and integrity.
  • Tax violations.
  • Violations of customs rules.

The presentation of the platform took place this morning at the AADE e-Governance Headquarters, conducted by its Manager Georgios Pitsilis in the presence of the Minister of National Economy and Finance Kostis Hatzidakis, Deputy Minister Harris Theocharis and Secretary General for Tax Policy and Public Property Maria Psila.

PS As the repeated practice of applying such measures in Greece shows, the first to use it are enemies, competitors, or simply out of a spiritual desire to cause mischief. Then the authorities, making sure that out of 1000 real cases, a maximum of 1 will be valid, will abolish this system. However, given the situation with the budget, this measure may be continued, despite many false denunciations, because “taxes for any state are sacred.”
