Preferred the beach to the parade

On the holiday of October 28, many residents of Greece preferred to “lay on the beach” than “drag to the city center to watch the parade,” fortunately, the weather permitted.

This year, due to the fact that we are not talking about a three-day weekend, and also because of the very good weather, Greek holidaymakers, as emphasized by new POX vice-president Angelos Kallias, are choosing resorts and areas around city centers rather than purely winter destinations countries that take time to get there and cooler temperatures to be attractive.

As a result of this, Kalavryta and Arkadia, due to their proximity to Athens, operate with an occupancy rate of 80%, while the average occupancy rate for all winter destinations in the country is 60%. Of course, there are also destinations where hotel occupancy does not exceed 40%. Meanwhile, comparisons with last year are uneven: occupancy across the country reached 70%, says POX vice president.

At the moment, the main blow to domestic tourism has been dealt in Larissa and Volos, where the occupancy rate of tourist accommodation facilities does not exceed 25%. Actually Mr. Kallias demands the immediate intervention of the competent ministry to carry out a communication campaign in specific areas. According to him, there is a business that either did not suffer or managed to get back on its feet and now needs support from the Ministry of Tourism. As happened with Evia and other areas of the country that experienced natural disasters.

Anyway bookings in the country’s mountain destinations are progressing at a slow pace, and the weather may be to blame, Mr. Kallias says. In fact, he argues that the onset of autumn (and cooler days) is what will shape the “picture” of the next days and months in the directions in question.

Tellingly, the sun and sea model has kept hotels open in Greece, particularly in Rhodes, Crete and Kos. The end of the tourist season this year is expected on November 15.
