Ukrainian "volunteer formations" in the Russian Federation

ISW experts report that the Russians are forcing Ukrainian prisoners to join “volunteer units” for military operations in Ukraine.

IN report The Institute for the Study of War* notes that this is a clear violation of the Geneva Prisoners of War Convention.

The analytical review states: Russian media reported on October 27 that the volunteer battalion “Bogdan Khmelnytsky” “recruited” about 70 Ukrainian prisoners of war from various Russian colonies, began training and, after completing training, will be deployed to an unspecified section of the front line.

ISW experts note that forcing prisoners of war to participate in hostilities is a violation of the Geneva Prisoners of War Convention, which provides:

“No prisoner of war may be sent or held in areas where he may be exposed to fire in a combat zone, nor may he be employed in work that is unhealthy or dangerous.”

*The Institute for the Study of War is an American think tank founded in 2007 by Kimberly Kagan. The Institute for the Study of War conducts research in the fields of defense and international affairs.

Previously, our publication reported that in Ukraine there was battalion “Siberia”consisting of Russian citizens willing to fight against their country’s invasion.
