Poseidonas Avenue "goes underground"

Work continues on the project for the underground part of Poseidonas Avenue in the Elliniko area.

An example of an urban development that will combine the natural beauty of the area and its unique features with iconic buildings of unique architectural design, The Ellinikon.

The largest urban reconstruction on a European scale – the road project for the underground part of Poseidonas Avenue – will renew the capital’s road network, ensuring the fastest possible passage of vehicles.

According to Lamda Development’s official report for the 3rd quarter of 2023, work was progressing at a rapid pace. 70% of earthworks, 45% of base slab concreting, as well as 7,400 m3 of wall concreting have been completed. Construction of the tunnel roof continues.

The 1.3 km underground section will stretch from Alimos Beach to Agios Kosmas Marina and will make a decisive contribution to reducing traffic congestion as will result in the removal of 6 traffic lights.

It will have 6 lanes (3 in each stream), a speed limit of 70 km/h, and when it is built (approximately in 2025), there will be no need to stop traffic in connection with the opening of a new road, since in just for one night the existing (ground) will be closed and at the same time the entrance to the new underground section of the highway will be opened.

The project was implemented using the cut and cover method (i.e. cut and cover), which was chosen in order not to change the surface topography.

There will be a tunnel about 6 meters highdesigned taking into account the highest standards of fire safety, traffic regulations etc. and, according to Lamda Development, will become one of the most modern at the European level.
