A Czech priest destroyed children’s pumpkins for Halloween because it was a “satanic holiday.”
Interestingly, while most of the Western world, with the exception of Greece, notes Halloween October 31st, the roots of this holiday go deep into ancient Greek mythology. The ancient Greeks believed that after death people went to the river bank Styx, which flowed on the border between the Earth and the underworld. They gave a tip to a certain ferryman, Charon, to take him across the river to the underworld to spend eternity there.
Pumpkins that children carved for Halloween were placed in Kyrdejova Park in the Czech Republic. When the priest destroyed them, new ones were installed the next day, but they too suffered the same fate.
Priest Jaromir Šmejkal eventually apologized for his actions in an open letter and said he would have acted differently if he had known it was “childish creativity.” “I saw many symbols of the satanic Halloween celebration on the holy ground. I acted in accordance with my faith and my duty to be the father and protector of the children entrusted to me, and removed these symbols,” he wrote in his letter. At the same time, he expressed the opinion that the tradition of celebrating Halloween was invented by the “pagan modern world.”
Children carved pumpkins for the village’s Halloween event. Some reportedly burst into tears when they were told their creations had been destroyed. The priest said he had no intention of harming anyone, especially children. “But try to remember that it is my duty to protect children and families from the hidden evil,” he added.
