First trip in a year outside the former USSR: Putin flew to China

Russian President Vladimir Putin flew to China on October 17 to meet with his counterpart Xi Jinping and participate in the Belt and Road Forum.

Negotiations with Xi Jinping will be held on October 18: first in an expanded format, then in a narrow format, in the format of a working breakfast. It is possible that the heads of state will have a one-on-one conversation “on the most sensitive topics.” During the visit, Putin will speak at the One Belt, One Road forum.

The Russian delegation includes senior government officials and businessmen. Putin was met at the airport by Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao. How writes Reuters publication, the purpose of the trip is to demonstrate trust and “boundless” partnership between countries even in the conditions of war in Ukraine.

This is Putin’s second trip abroad since the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued a warrant for his arrest in March. And the first official trip outside the former Soviet Union this year, after visiting Kyrgyzstan earlier this month.

The ICC, which has accused Vladimir Putin of illegally deporting children from Ukraine, obliges the court’s 123 member states to arrest the Russian president and hand him over to The Hague for trial if he arrives on their territory. Neither Kyrgyzstan nor China are members of the ICC, which was created to prosecute war crimes.
