Earthquake in Attica: “This area has been shaking for a week now,” says seismologist

Specialist scientists “keep their finger on the pulse”, carefully monitoring the situation in different areas of Attica and seismic activity.

Today there was an earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale, centered 8 km northeast of Agia Marina Lavreotiki and with a focal depth of 13.4 km, in an area that Akis Tselentis reports has been “shaking for a week.” . In particular, the director of the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens points out that this kind of earthquake is felt throughout the region.

“This happened in an area that has been shaking for a week. We record earthquakes of small magnitude, but due to the distance, shallow source depth and rupture mechanism, they are felt throughout the basin,” the seismologist said.

Professor Tselentis also notes that the seismic history of the region is not critical: “there have been no large earthquakes here, and we do not know of any marine fault with high seismic potential in the area where we are now recording microearthquakes.”

According to him, there will be no problems with the development of seismic activity: “The Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens has concentrated its instruments in this area and monitors with great accuracy everything that happens in this region. Even minimal tremors are recorded.”
