Coronavirus and the risk of hip problems

Scientists have found that severe coronavirus infection can become a risk factor for the development of osteonecrosis and problems with the hip joint. This is in addition to the complications already known and proven by doctors that occur in the central nervous system, problems with the heart and blood clotting (formation of blood clots).

The cause of osteonecrosis is not yet entirely clear. Scientists put forward two versions: COVID-19 itself may be to blame, or the problem may be high doses of corticosteroids, which are sometimes used in treatment. But the fact has already been established and recognized.

If at the beginning of 2020 practically nothing was known about the new disease, then Doctors now have more information. Studying the complaints of patients, experts noted that most often the consequences of an illness are reflected in the joints. Patients complain of pain that appeared shortly after recovery.

Moreover, complaints regarding problems with joints, spine or muscles are among the most common when compared with all others. People with fright notice that painful sensations have appeared that have never bothered them before. And such problems affect almost every 2nd person who has recovered.

The study was published on the Nationai Library Medicine website.

An osteopathic neurologist spoke in more detail about problems with the hip joint and the occurrence of osteoarthritis in 35-year-old (!) people.

The occurrence of joint problems after suffering from Covid:

  • Direct effect on human tissue. Coronavirus disables our entire body. It has a direct negative effect on cartilage, bones and joints. The entire musculoskeletal system suffers because it does not receive the necessary nutrients and vitamins. The body’s forces are aimed at fighting the virus, all other tasks are postponed “for later.” This cannot but affect the condition of all our tissues.
  • Toxic poisoning. When a virus dies in the body of any living creature, it does not dissolve anywhere and does not disappear without a trace. Dead harmful cells release toxins, or, in simple terms, poisons. They poison the tissues they enter, thereby causing internal inflammatory processes. The entire body is susceptible to this effect, but most often it is the joints, muscles or organs that are affected. Getting into them, toxins formed by the dead virus provoke inflammation.
  • Insufficient physical activity. It so happened that during the pandemic, absolutely everyone went into self-isolation. This circumstance significantly reduced physical activity, because few people in such conditions could fully engage in sports. In addition to the already severe weakening due to the disease, the muscles and joints also practically do not move. This also entails a whole range of problems associated with them.
  • Weight gain and obesity. We are talking about the far-reaching consequences of self-isolation. Many people, finding themselves locked up for the first time, began to rely on increased nutrition. Firstly, there was more free time and, therefore, the opportunity to stand at the stove. Secondly, it’s easier psychologically: it is known that people tend to “eat up” stress. As a result, calorie consumption increased, and physical activity, on the contrary, came to naught. This could not but affect the muscles and joints.
  • Exacerbation of chronic diseases. Coronavirus affects mainly the adult population, and most often the elderly. Many of them already have problems with the musculoskeletal system. They are caused precisely by age-related changes in the body, as well as various acquired chronic diseases. Coronavirus only intensifies the above problems.

In any case, whatever reason (or set of reasons) forms the basis of post-Covid joint syndrome, it must be identified and then eliminated. Contact medical specialists on time.
