The leader of the Smer-SD party, which won the parliamentary elections in Slovakia, intends to stop aid to Ukraine

The winner of the parliamentary elections in Slovakia, Robert Fico, said, repeating his past statement: “People in Slovakia have bigger problems than Ukraine.”

During the press conference, he noted that he is ready to begin negotiations with other parties to form a coalition government after President Zuzana Caputova asks him to do so:

“We are here, we are ready, we have learned something, we have become more experienced. We have clear ideas, we have clear plans. We know what exactly the government should do.”

Fico had previously declared his intentions to stop military and political support for Ukraine, and also argued that talking about Ukraine’s entry into EU now it is “illusory”, and in Ukraine, supposedly, “Nazism is tolerated”.

Let us remind you that the left opposition party “Course – Social Democracy” (SMER) won the parliamentary elections in Slovakia. She received almost 23% of the votes based on the results of counting 99.9% of the ballots.

Rivals from the liberal Progressive Slovakia received about 18%, and its leader, Vice-President of the European Parliament Michal Simečka, called the results “bad news for the country.” Five more political associations exceeded the five percent threshold.

The winning party, Course Social Democracy, led by former Prime Minister Robert Fico, has been criticized for its populist and pro-Russian views. If he came to power, Fico promised to stop providing military assistance to Ukraine. Given the election results, he is considered the most likely candidate for the new Slovak government. It will most likely be a coalition, since not a single party was able to get a majority of votes.
