Theoharis: taxes are not increasing – there will be no surprises

Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance of Greece Harris Theocharis, speaking on Real FM, emphasized that tax rates for freelancers will not increase.

He noted that “There is no talk within the government that there are any plans to change the status of social benefits or the criteria on which they are awarded to freelancers.” In addition, he reminded: “The government has emphasized from the very beginning that unexpected changes to tax rates will not be introduced either for freelancers or for any other segment of the country’s population. We have never introduced and will not introduce measures without public consensus, measures that have not undergone a preliminary consultation procedure . We as a government have already taken important initiatives (expanding digital transactions, changes in taxation, strengthening controls, etc.) to combat tax evasion.”

In the context of the same speech, Theoharis clarified that the possibility of increasing tax rates is not being considered. However, as part of the fight against tax evasion in the freelance sector, the economic headquarters will activate new measures in 2024, such as:

  • Mandatory introduction of electronic invoices for cross-checking and verification of transactions in real time.
  • The widespread introduction of electronic books (myDATA), which means that declared income cannot be less than income received using electronic information (myDATA, cash – POS), and only those expenses will be recognized as invoices for deduction from gross income , which were transmitted electronically to myDATA.

It is unclear how these statements will fit in with other statements from the Ministry of Finance, which deal with tax increases for those who declare income below 10,000 euros.
